Big Idea: How do the audience, purpose, and occasion affect the way we write?

Learning Target: 

Reading: Today you will read articles on Newsela for 10 minutes.

Agenda:

1. Newsela reading assignment:
1. You need to read at least five articles this week from five different topics.
2. You need to pass the quiz for each article. Start on a higher difficulty of reading and then move down.
3. Screenshot your screen when you pass a quiz and paste it onto the Google Doc in GOOGLE CLASSROOM.
4. Write a one-sentence summary of the article. Your sentence must have exactly 15 words. I will check.
5. This is due on Friday.
6. If you finish before Friday, you may borrow one of the books from my bookshelf and read it for ten minutes.

2. Today we will go to the library and check out your textbooks for the year.
3. English Journal #3: Audience
1. This will be another Emoji Power Paragraph but with a different purpose. How would you write a story of the audience was a kid in elementary school.

2. English Journal #2: Letter of Understanding
1. Tell me about your high school experience before this class. What were you like when you were a 9th grader? How did you change in 10th grade? Who were your English teachers?
2. What do you want me to know about you? What are your likes and dislikes? What are you worried about? Tell me something about your family. Etc.

Agenda:

1. You will be assigned a seat and participate in an icebreaker.
2. We will go over the expectations for this class.
3. You will write an Emoji Power Paragraph in your first English Journal.

Chapter 8 Activity

Big Idea: The American Dream: what is it all for?

Reading: Today we will read for 10 minutes. 

Agenda:

1. Chapter 8 activity.
2. Work on your Newsela challenge. Last day to turn it in is today.
1. Read at least 10 articles ALL the way through. Read to learn something new.
1. How many articles have I read?
2. Read at least one article from 5 different categories (Kids doesn't count as a category).
3. Write a rhetorical precis for two of the articles. Look back at English Journal #9 for help on writing a rhetorical precis. We wrote one together.
   
4. Take the quiz and pass with at least a 3/4 for four of the articles.
5. Create a flipgrid video that explains what the article is about and your thoughts about the topic. Use some of the sentences below to help you create a script for your video.
1. The article "???" was about...In the article it described...The purpose of the article was to...The article made me think about...I wonder...One question I have for the author is...Overall, I thought...
